artistpd01.JPGI work in a labor-intensive variation of the French technique of pate de verre, or glass paste, a specific process which produces a very subtle form of glass. By this method I create delicate, thin-walled, translucent crystal vessels, bowls, and platters.

In the traditional sense, pate de verre refers to crushed glass mixed into a thick paste with a binding agent and water. This mixture is placed in a refractory mould and fired slowly in a kiln until fused. This process entraps thousands of tiny air bubles in the glass, resulting in visual and tactile qualities that can be achieved in no other way. It may resemble ceramic, alabaster, stone, marble, or be translucent like my pate de cristal. Above all, pate de verre has a dense texture that asks to be touched.

pated02.JPGIn my pate de cristal all sensations are condensed. Contemplating it, even without an image, everyone can create a story from the imagination and be invaded by the most profund recollections. Like music, it acts through the intermediary of the senses; harmonious form and colour correspond to harmonies of sound. My palette exists to effect impressions and sensations only and I have endeavoured to capture those rare "in-between" moments in our lives where we are most vulnerable; between light and dar, right and wrong, logic and love. I like to think of my work as somethin that beautifies and enriches our lives and it worries me that some people have fogotten the need for beauty
