"I was drawn to the tropics by the idyllic lifestyle, climate and environment. In Cairns I knew I had the ideal place to develop my glass art, and put into practice all I had learned in previous years of training. My Bachelor of Arts-Visual, majoring in glass under Klaus Moje at the Australian National University Canberra School of Art and practical experience as artist in residence in many parts of Australia and overseas had prepared me to fulfil my lifelong dream."
Studio 8 Glassworks was established in 1992 with the idea of creating quality handcrafted glass art, which would reach a worldwide audience. Inspiration came from my immediate surroundings of world heritage eco-systems; and so was born the "Reef and Rainforest Collection". These glass pieces depict bright and colourful images of fish, marine life, birds, frogs and flora in the tropics.
Each piece is designed by Studio 8 Glassworks; the handcrafted glass pieces are individually cut and assembled by hand before being fired twice in our kilns. The layering of different coloured glasses develops the bright colours and designs, no paint is used in this process. Every piece is a wonderful one-off colourful glass creation, which delights and will never fade.
As well as this range we also do larger commissioned site-specific pieces; architectural panels and custom made interior design fittings. Although we specialise in fusing and slumping, we also do 3 dimensional sculptural castings in glass and exciting pieces in pate de verre.
Our growth has correlated that of Far North Queensland's popularity throughout the world. Sutdio 8 Glasswords has created the premium award for tourism's highest achievers for the past two years. Our awards and gifts in glass portray the energy and excitement that attracts thousands of people to Tropical Far North Queensland every year. An ever-appreciative audience has seen our glass displayed in Singapore, San Francisco, London and this year in Munich and New York. We look forward to the challenge of the new millennium knowing our glass will continue to fill the needs and desires of a new tommorrow.
