This workshop is designed for the serious glass addict who wishes to extend their experience from slumping to the next level – This class introduces students to the hand-built refractory mold process through a series of casting projects. The first casting gives students an opportunity to get their hands dirty with a basic open-faced casting. For the second project, they will use found objects to create three identical molds that will be cast in frit, sheet, and billet to illustrate the unique qualities of each glass form. Students will learn basic coldworking skills in addition to firing procedures and investment recipes. No prerequisites.

Students should wear covered footwear (no thongs, sandals) and bring safety glasses, notebook and pens. All materials, equipment and morning/afternoon teas & coffees will be supplied. (Bring your own lunch or see catering options.)

• Modelling for open casting
• Refractory mold making for open casting

This workshop will take the student step by step through the process of creating a 3D glass sculpture.Students begin with a pre-made wax form that they manipulate and invest in a hand-built mold, and then they cast glass into the mold after loading it in the kiln. Building on this experience, students learn how to transform a clay model or found object into wax and hence cast glass. Basic coldworking methods are demonstrated and available to the students for further exploration. There are no prerequisites, though a background in ceramics or 3-D modeling is helpful.

Topics covered:

  • Modelling
  • Positive, negative & refractory mold making
  • Waxes
  • Glass preperation
  • Firing schedules for casting
  • Finishing cast glass piece
  • Power point presentation and lecture covering all aspects of casting
